    Description

Roman Legionary Marine Fish design used by the Rhine, Danube and Nile legionary.  These come in a pair of two (facing each other) in either brass or white brass (silver) and can be used to decorate armor, phalera, Roman standards or any other type of Roman equipment or weapons.  It seems that Roman legionary liked the notion that they could be seen as Marines or a fighting Naval unit and liked using attributes associate with it. Legion X Fretensis fought under Octavian in a naval engagement against Sextus Pompey near Sicily and for the next few hundreds years they used dolphins, tridents, the god Neptune and the Roman galley as symbols on both their counter struck coins and fortress tiles.  It also appears that if you patrolled a river like the Rhine, Danube or Nile in boats keeping an eye out for enemy moment (like our modern day border guards do but in jeeps) it gave you the same privilege.  A famous legionary relief in the Mainz Museum shows legionary soldiers with fish on their helmets where the eyebrows usually are.  Many Roman helmets show designs in this area as well.  A Legion XXII PIA tile that I own shows a trident as it's main symbol.  Although
Legio XXII Primigenia symbols were the
    Capricorn
    [1]
    and the demigod
    Hercules
, they chose to use this Trident as their symbol which was an attribute of the Sea God Neptune.  They are not known to have fought in any sea engagements.  Their primary job however was to guard the Rhine and it can be perfectly assumed that a lot of this patrolling was done on small wooden Roman ships carrying a small consignment of soldiers.
Again, you are buying two of these Roman fish designs facing each other.  I have one set available in brass and one set available in silver that are in stock.  You can buy either one of these yellow brass (gold color) or white brass (silver color).  They are 100% metal and are 3.5 "x 3" with flat back sides in high relief art work.  This Roman Legionary fish can be used for Roman Phalera or for Military Standard decorations or for armor decoration or for a clock clasp.  It could also be attached on to legionary equipment such as the wooden body of scorpion or any type of ballista ect. and so on.
