    Description

This sale is only for the larger center brass head piece and does not include the two smaller disk on the sides.  For sale here is a rare copy in Brass or Yellow Bronze of a fine head of Bacchus or Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. He wears an ivy wreath hung with leaves and berries. This central piece could be used on a Roman standard or it could be the central focus piece for a Roman Phalera (harness) for either a centurion or standard bearer who likes his brew. Bacchus in centurions Phalera have been found. This head is all that survives of what was a bronze applique of the god. The whites of the eyes originally held inlaid irises. The dreamy, slightly unfocused gaze, as well as the slightly parted lips, conveys sensuousness and sexual ambivalence, characteristics frequently found in depictions of the god. On this head, the ivy wreath identifies the god as Bacchus /Dionysos. It is 5 ¼ inches tall by 4 ½ inches wide. The two phalera disk on the sides show Bacchus festivals and are not included but are available. Since this is a very difficult and expensive piece to cast in brass, I do not keep them in stock. If you purchase this, please know that it will take approximately one to two months before your copy can be cast in a foundry and shipped to you.  I have to wait in line to get items cast just like anyone else at any foundry.  The bronze metal foundry cast copy can be sold cheaper at 9 but a cold cast copy can be made and sold for .
